The ICU Book |
The ICU Book, Third edition by Paul L. Marino. This best-selling resource provides a general overview and basic information for all adult intensive care units. The material is presented in a brief and quick-access format which allows for topic and exam review. It provides enough detailed and specific information to address most all questions and problems that arise in the ICU. Emphasis on fundamental principles in the text should prove useful for patient care outside the ICU as well. New chapters in this edition include hyperthermia and hypothermia syndromes; noninvasive ventilation; and non-pharmaceutical toxic ingestions. Sections have been reorganized and consolidated when appropriate to reinforce concepts. This is a perfect way to obtain a fairly broad fund of ICU knowledge without having to stop every other paragraph to analize and digest the words used to express an idea. I find it very useful for residents and ICU fellows. All physicians in different levels of training will find something interesting in this book. Its size makes it very attractive and its no-frills medical terminology makes it extremely approachable. The book has excellent summaries of pathophys behind what we see/diagnose/measure/do in the icu. the book does have significant drawbacks, though, namely that it is highly biased towards the author's occasionally contraversial opinions.
