Dynamic Coordination in the Brain - From Neurons to Mind

Dynamic Coordination in the Brain
Dynamic Coordination in the Brain: From Neurons to Mind (Strüngmann Forum Reports) [Hardcover] Christoph von der Malsburg (Editor), William A. Phillips (Editor), Wolf Singer (Editor). A fundamental shift is occurring in neuroscience and related disciplines. In the past, researchers focused on functional specialization of the brain, discovering complex processing strategies based on convergence and divergence in slowly adapting anatomical architectures. Yet for the brain to cope with ever-changing and unpredictable circumstances, it needs strategies with richer interactive short-term dynamics. Recent research has revealed ways in which the brain effectively coordinates widely distributed and specialized activities to meet the needs of the moment. This book explores these findings, examining the functions, mechanisms, and manifestations of distributed dynamical coordination in the brain and mind across different species and levels of organization.  It considers the role of dynamic coordination in temporally structured activity and explores these issues at different levels, from synaptic and local circuit mechanisms to macroscopic system dynamics, emphasizing their importance for cognition, behavior, and psychopathology.

Atlas of Morphology and Functional Anatomy of the Brain

Atlas of Morphology and Functional Anatomy
 of the Brain
Atlas of Morphology and Functional Anatomy of the Brain. T. Scarabino (Editor), U. Salvolini (Editor), F. Di Salle (Contributor), H. Duvernoy (Contributor), P. Rabischong (Contributor). This dual atlas aims at illustrating the anatomy of the brain and its appearance on MR images using a simple and effective mode of presentation. Following an introductory chapter, "Comprehensive anatomy of the human brain", the book is divided into a morphological and a functional imaging section. The morphological atlas presents 3D surface images followed by high-definition MR sections acquired in the axial, coronal, and sagittal planes. The MR images are paired with the corresponding anatomical images to enable their clinical correlation. The functional atlas includes illustrative MR images showing cortical activation in various functional areas (including the auditory, motor, visual, and language areas). "This book presents correlations between morphology and functional anatomy of the brain, as an atlas … . The authors have achieved a nice and clear synopsis of the actual knowledge and possibilities of functional imaging of the anatomy of the brain. This book will be an interesting basis for neurologists, neurosurgeons, radiologists, physiologists interested in neurophysiology, but also psychiatrists … and it will also be useful for showing to the students the relevance of the anatomy of the central nervous system." (AC Tobenas, Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy, Vol. 29 (2), 2007).
